Finally.

Posted by DSAFIRE on August 27th, 2007

Woke up late to find that our mighty little Huntard, Lucky had stalked and killed one of the blocks of foam used to hold the slipcovers in place. Repeatedly. All over the carpet.

Flew out the door, got my interview at CIC.

I am now a legal Permanent Resident of Canada. My passport is stamped, and my PR card (equivalent to the US Green Card) will come by mail in about six weeks, give or take two weeks.

Went to the OHIP office and filed that paperwork too. I have a three month waiting time for that, which I was misinformed was retroactive *irritated*. Ah well. So when that’s over they’ll send me my health card, I’ll be covered, and can start looking for an MD I can live with.

I cant get my SIN (SS) number until I actually have my PR card in my hot little hands though. The woman who took care of me at Immigration said flat out they wont do squat for me without it. So I cant start looking for work untill after that arrives and however long it takes them to process me.

Im flat exhausted, but my gods, no more looking over my shoulder wondering if TPTB are going to send me back. Maybe I’ll be able to relax without resorting to pharmaceuticals now.

Not the end of the world, but the end of an age….

So Brad Fitzpatrick, Open Source prince and LiveJournal creator is moving out.

He hasnt been on the LJ Team in a long time, and as much as we’ve missed him in the recent dispute between fandom and 6Apart, it’s understandable. Enough is enough, and he’s had to deal with more than enough shit from us (the LJ userbase) over the years.

I’m happy I have my WP setup on my domain at DreamHost now. I dont personally care for the direction LJ as an entity is headed in, and if my friends list there didnt keep me feeling as plugged in* as it does, I wouldnt even bother with the crossposting. My LJ subscription will probably not be renewed. I’ll still read my comms and such there, but I’ve lost faith in 6A, and am SO glad I decided on WP instead of Moveable Type. But my WP blog is blogging in the void, and LJ is a community… a community I enjoy being a part of.

So nothing much is going to change for me. I’ll keep reading my flist and participating in my comms, but doing my main posting to WordPress. I’m just going to make sure I have my old content properly backed up to PDF, and watch to see what happens. I’ve registered a GreatestJournal, but havent moved anything over there. I’ll be watching and waiting, and if the community at Livejournal dies, at least I know I have my own space to babble in that isnt under the reins of anyone but me. Maybe I’ll start sniffing around bloggers communities in hopes of finding a new community to be a part of.

*not that I feel anyone is really paying attention, but hey, it gives me that illusion

*flashback*

So there was a little minitower abandoned on the “trashed, take it if ya want it” heap out back.

Thinking that I might be able to finally salvage myself a linux box, or something I could run Pear PC on to emulate OSX, I snagged it and dragged it inside.

As the first order of business, I cracked the case open. And started laughing.

First off, the drives (including the floppy!) are all connected to a riser board. Yes, a riser. For you kiddies out there, a riser is a card you connect as an interface for IDE on boards that dont have ports installed. Yes, once upon a time, those existed.

There’s a vidcard the length of my forearm, sound isnt much smaller and a modem that might not even be 56K. I havent yanked it yet, I’m too busy laughing. The HD is still in it, but I havent torn it out to see what exactly it is. Curious to see if the floppy drive still functioned, I pushed the eject on it to see if the mechanicals at least worked.

It ejected Disk 1 of a Windows 3.1 install set. *dies laughing at the cute old hardware*

It’s a 486 at the newest, so it’s of no real use. It’s a sturdy enough case though, maybe worth salvaging for modding, if one installs a miniboard. I’ll finish tearing it apart tomorrow maybe, when Dave comes down so we can amuse ourselves further with this aged hardware.

WHOOHOO!!

Finally today we hear from CIC.

Lee’s sponsorship approval notice and my “Approval In Principal” letter are here on my desk. So Im through the first hurdle finally, and have legal status in Canada again. We have to pay the rest of the fee, but from what I’ve heard, the odds are high of my final approval and Permanant Resident card being rubber-stamped through since Im just from the States.

Now we’ve been referred to the Local Hamilton office. I have to wait to hear from them, since they may decide to call us for an interview (I hope not, i’d be so nervous!) and will want my passport to stamp so I can offically “land” in Canada.

Slightly nervy as to what exactly the “decision made” notice on the eclient is. It may just be in reference to my AIP, or it may be that I’ve already been rubber stamped and they’re just waiting for the fee. I wish it was clearer.

PROGRESS!! At LAST!!
